The Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand | Matatū Aotearoa is the professional body for the teaching profession, representing teachers from early childhood education through primary and secondary schooling in English and Māori medium settings.

Their small in-house legal team are seeking a skilled Lawyer to join them on a full time, permanent basis.

They are currently a team of four, with a Lead Lawyer and two other Lawyers, so this role will see you as the fourth team member. The team have a high workload so your ability to work collaboratively as well as independently is important.

Your role will include a diverse workload and will see you:

  • Provide legal advice across the organisation
  • Ensure fair and robust investigations by specialist investigators and evaluators
  • Advise and support decision-making bodies
  • Undertake prosecutions before the Disciplinary Tribunal and instruct external counsel
  • Provide legal advice in relation to OIA and Privacy Act requests
  • Draft formal legal documentation
  • Support the organisation with other special projects

Ideal skills and experience required for the role are:

  • Minimum 3 years PQE
  • Litigation experience in Court or experience working within or being instructed by a regulatory body
  • Current practising certificate
  • Ability to work within a diverse workplace and be willing to develop competence in and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Writing skills that means you can convey complex information in simple terms
  • Experience in a disciplinary, complaints, or investigative environment
  • Strong verbal communication and relationship skills
  • Any experience working in a regulatory or professional body highly desirable
